Miranda. 22. Useless wastrel who daydreams in sequins, comic book expressions and musical numbers.

You might know me from that one glasses meme.

Prone to posting feminist quotes, various and varying babes, items of the literary and comic nerd culture and the more than occasional tentacle.

Any reaction images/gifs I post (unless they are of my face) are almost definitely not mine.

!! DO NOT SUPPORT PICTURES FOR SAD CHILDREN !!

The creator recently admitted that he is faking his depression for money. He also goes on to accuse the entire disorder of being a “socially enforced” construct that doesn’t medically exist. (Pointedly he only brings this up after he gained nearly $44,000 more than he needed in order to get his project off the ground.)

Essentially, he has been stealing from people who have depression by pretending to identify with them. In reality he does not believe their disorder exists and merely considers them his “chosen demographic.”

This man is a scumbag and he does not deserve so much as a cent more than what he’s already scammed from others.

Wow. What in the ever-loving fuck. The guy who draws Pictures for Sad Children is not only faking mental illness for personal gain, he goes on to say that depression is not a “real” experience and says the “culture of depression” prevents people from dealing with their emotions. An excerpt:

Each of my comics can be read from a “depressed” perspective and from a “non-depressed” (i.e. healthy, self-aware and loving) perspective. From this perspective each of my comics suggests and defends the notion that depression is not a “real” experience, but one of many non-real experiences that are culturally and socially enforced by language and the apparent limits we place on our own perceptions.

OK a few things. 1) People who have depression - a mental illness with a wide range of symptoms and effects - can still be healthy, self-aware and loving. 2) The “notion” that “depression is not a ‘real’ experience” but instead a “non-real experience”? CITATION NEEDED.

And then he has the audacity to marvel that no one else has come forward to admit they’re faking a real disease for personal gain.

Fuck you, buddy. Fuck you so hard. As if people with mental illness don’t have enough “invisible illness” stigma to deal with. As if we don’t already struggle with people wondering whether we’re “really” depressed or just sad/lazy/tired/stressed/angry. As if fighting depression isn’t difficult enough. You’re going to make tens of thousands of dollars and throw it in your donors’ faces by accusing all of them of either faking it or not dealing with their issues? What. The. Fuck.

I never even interpreted his comics as being written by a depressed person. They’re a little macabre, but not necessarily comics about depression. He didn’t need to fake it. Having a dark sense of humor doesn’t mean you have to be depressed and vice versa.

This is some sick shit. For real.

Oh man, I’ve loved Pictures for Sad Children for ages. Now? No more. Fuck this guy. Goddamn.
