Miranda. 23. Filipina-Australian, cisgender, and bisexual lady-type. Useless wastrel who daydreams in sequins, comic book expressions and musical numbers.

You might know me from that one glasses meme.

Prone to posting intersectional feminist quotes, various and varying babes, items of the literary and comic nerd culture and the occasional tentacle.

Any reaction images/gifs I post (unless they are of my face) are almost definitely not mine.

Here is a lovely piece of fanart (is that one word these days?) by Stevie Lewis, a visual development (“vis dev” to the cool kids) artist over at Dreamworks. Check out more of her great, charming work on her blog: chocosweete.blogspot.com
Click on the image above if you want to leave her a nice comment (because Fred and I couldn’t figure out how to link directly to the original post of hers on Blogspot, even though Fred is 8 years younger than me)!

My piece for Pixel Drip’s I’m the Avatar, Deal With It! art show coming up later this spring.
-C)GET IT it’s like an old SEP cover because the show’s all old-tymey, I’m so brilliant)

I love it!  I grew up admiring Norman Rockwell’s art.  Never thought I’d see an Avatar/Rockwell mash up, but it works somehow.  Looking forward to this art show.

Aw geez, thanks!  Had no idea you had seen this, completely flattered.
Gonna put a big “CREATOR APPROVED” stamp on it now,

Asami watches as Mako’s feelings towards Korra begin to show.

#awww I hated these scenes #bb asami did not deserve this #she was counting on mako to give her support after her father’s betrayal #all she wanted was reassurance of his feelings really #even when she confronted him #he still wanted to ‘talk about it later’ #god why #I wish her entrance to team avatar wasn’t to be mako’s love interest #because now that they’re broken up #idk how she’s still part of the team#when her ex is dating the avatar #also what I like about Asami is #she never blamed Korra for having feelings for Mako #she just really wanted reassurance tbh#bb how are you so strong #after the BS you went through #I would have gone all equalist mode #hopefully she’ll have a better narrative next season

All these tags, forever. Asami, you deserve so much more than this douchebag.

My conversation with a little girl on the bus.

thatgirlgabyright:

On the bus ride to school this morning, a little girl and her mother sat in the row in front of me. I paid no attention until she turned around and smiled at me. Her front teeth were missing and her brown hair was in pigtails. Her mother has fallen asleep beside her. I removed my headphones and returned the gesture.

Girl: Hi!

Me: Hi there.

Girl: You look like the girl on TV!

I couldn’t help but smile.

Me: I do?

Girl: Yeah!

She rummages through her mother’s purse and retrieves an iPhone.

Girl: See! Look! She shows me a photo of Korra smiling.

Me: Yeah. I guess I do kind of look like her. But I don’t have pretty blue eyes like her.

The sun hits my eyes so I close them.

Girl: No!

She reaches out to try and touch me, but she can’t reach.

Girl: I like your eyes better. They’re like maple syrup and I love maple syrup!

Me: Ha, thanks.

Girl: Do you like a boy like Mako?

I panic, I don’t want to tell her I’m a lesbian.

Me: Umm no, I don’t. I don’t want a boy like Mako.

Girl: Good! Me neither! He’s a stupid head!

I laughed to myself, exercising muscles that I haven’t used in a while.

Me: You don’t like him?

Girl: No! I want Korra to be with someone else but my momma says it can’t happen because it’s bad.

Me: Why does she say that?

Girl: Because it’s bad for two girls to be together like that. But Asami’s so nice!

I could not believe what I was hearing.

Me: Yeah she is. It’s not bad for two girls to be together. Sometimes girls like girls and boys like boys. And some people like them both and some people don’t like either. And that’s all okay.

Girl: Oh. Do you want a girl like Asami then?

Me: Yes, I do.

Girl: Cross the street and don’t look! Maybe she’ll hit you with her scooter!

Me: Ha. Yeah, maybe.

Girl: I wish I could look like girls on TV.

Me: But you’re so much prettier. Don’t worry about them.

Her mother wakes up and pulls the cord, they’ll be getting off at the next stop.

Girl: Okay! Don’t look so sad though. Bye Korra!

I couldn’t help but laugh.

Me: Bye Ikki.

The little girl shrieks with delight as she gets off the bus.

She had no concept of gay, striaght, bisexual, etc. She just knew what was nice and what wasn’t. She gave me a bit of hope for future generations. Not to mention she’s totally on board the SS Korrasami.

yamino:

I really wish that instead of having Korra immediately get her bending back, Asami would have trained her in using her bending training for what it was originally developed for:  nonbender martial arts.
I started doing a bunch of thumbnails for the scene as I imagine it, referencing real styles that Korra and Asami might use.  Who knows if I’ll ever have time to finish them into a proper comic. XD;
But I thought it would be fun if Asami shocked Korra by putting her in an MMA hold and Korra has no idea how to get out of it, because fighting with bending almost never gets so close range.
YEAH I KNOW I’VE BEEN READING TOO MUCH TEPPU AND IT MAKES ME EXCITED ABOUT FEMALE WRESTLING OK

UGH, that would have been so damn great. Also, reblogging as a personal reminder to myself to check out Teppu.

Mako feels like a badly written OC

korrafeels:

As an addendum to my last post, this also explains most of the problematic elements about Mako.

His personality, motivations, and actions are all bland.  His main feature is being sexy and cool and having a troubled, angsty past.  He effortlessly gets all the girls and can’t decide which one he prefers, so he goes with BOTH.

Meanwhile, all other characters are apparently frozen in place anytime the plot calls for people to actually, you know, care about Korra.  Even her parents don’t move a muscle to console her when she came out of that tent in the finale. No, only Mako is allowed to console her, to comfort her, to give two shits about her.

Korra has to be broken down, lonely, upset, friendless, so Mako can always swoop in to pick up the pieces.  Only Mako can team up with her on solo missions.  Only Mako can save her from Amon.  Only Mako can be complimented for his “incredible” bending by the main villain, despite the fact that he’s never been demonstrated to have particularly outstanding skills.

Mako is a Gary Stu. A self-insert power fantasy. I have the feeling that if they had even one non-male writer on the team this would have been pointed out and rectified.  The character could have been done justice, given some real meat and personality and INTEREST.  As it is, he feels like some kind of glamorized cheap knockoff of Zuko.

The fact that they seem to be bringing the same writing team to the table for Season 2 is not encouraging to me. =(

"Glamorized cheap knockoff of Zuko" sounds pretty accurate, which is sad, cause I remember thinking at the beginning, "oh, thank goodness, and here I thought he was going to be just like Zuko."

Nope. Just a way douchier, much more badly written version of him.
