Via Racebent DisneyVia you'll never die“Pop-culture has a lot of influence on my work. I like to re-contextualize art historical pieces with a twist of pop.” Awol Erizku
The young, Bronx-raised photographer Awol Erizku’s work is gaining considerable attention. A 2010 graduate of Cooper Union, he has managed, early in his career, the elusive feat of a solo show that opens tomorrow night at Hasted Kraeutler here in New York.
At a time when I see many young artists struggling to keep it going, someone like Awol Erizku demonstrates what is still possible. Of course, going to a prestigious school and having a mentor like David LaChapelle wouldn’t hurt anyone’s career, but Awol Erizku didn’t grow up advantaged. His portrait work reflects his community while inserting this community—through photography—into a greater art historic context, one where African American (and other people of color) are never well represented.
These photographs merit attention. They are beautiful and they captivate. In this short video Erizku’s passion and commitment to producing great work (and paying respect to his roots) look to be the real deal. I look forward to seeing the portraits first-hand and to pondering what’s next for this young artist. —Lane Nevares

On the costumes:
Doing period costumes is nothing new to Eric Pineda. As a veteran costume designer, educator and avid researcher, Pineda always makes sure he gets the right look and feel for a specific era. But how does he redo something that has already been done with aplomb? Such was the challenge posed by Pineda’s most recent project, the latest and biggest Philippine staging of the popular musical “The Little Mermaid.”

Via Racebent DisneySoooo, I know it’s been less than a week, but where’s my racebent Creamsicle?
Dunno about other races, but there’s already a clear equivalent with dyed hair/constantly clubbing/makeup guru-Asian girls and shy, studious Asian girls.
Or or or, I would love to see a white Asian-obsessed otaku-esque Normal-chan who meets Other Girl who turns out to be nothing like the manga-reading, K-Pop listening Lolita Japanese girl she was expecting. And then Other Girl has to break down all her preconceptions about how Not All Asian Girls Are Alike, No I Don’t Live Near Pandas.
I can’t draw, so someone get on this.
Expect a long rant because I am so angry that I have cried and screamed and I need to channel my anger into something productive. Like Tumblr.
But I think I really need to talk about why it is totally and completely wrong that a WHITE actor like Liam is cast as an obviously ethnic character.
Someone needs to tell Hollywood casting agencies that “tanned white people” are not acceptable substitutes for ethnicities.

Via I'll tumblr for yaKind of chipping at this image of a dark skinned Emma Frost done in crisp black and white silhouettes I’ve had rattling around in my head for months. More Flash doodles.
From Andrew Lang’s illustrated “Fairy Tale Books” to Disney’s cartoon fairy tale movies to even modern, “edgy” adaptations like the ABC drama “Once Upon a Time,” most fairy-tale depictions show stereotypical heterosexual, homogenous, white couples. Through these drawings, I reconstruct these relationships, depicting different races, body-types ranging from thin to muscular to curvy (and most importantly) ladies loving ladies.
Beauty and the Beast is re-imagined in a fantasy feudal Japan, where the beast is a horned, tattooed demonness seducing a beautiful princess. The Little Mermaid is set in Regency era Europe, and the mermaid* is rescuing a dark-skinned lady. Finally Cinderella, a 19th century girl dressed in a man’s suit, charms the princess, represented as a colored lady of the house, in a waltz on the dance floor.
Though all the drawings have “historical” basis (Heian Japan, European Regency, American Civil War), each drawing has a fantastical or historically inaccurate element to it — the demonness tattooed with modern Yakuza/gangster tats, the dark-skinned Regency girl, the Civil War era black high-society lady. These inaccuracies were included so that a variety of races could be inserted into historical images. Once I committed to wanting to depict various races in sometimes stereotypically Western settings, I decided that I would include something “inaccurate” in each drawing to unify them.
*My thoughts on mermaids: mermaids should have strong backs, big arms, and amazing six packs. If anyone used her upper body that much just to get around from place to place, I’d expect her to have huge, huge arms. So I made sure to give my blonde, generic mermaid nice buff arms.
Gorgeous illustrations. These are definitely fairy tales I want to read- especially the Beauty and the Beast story in fantasy Feudal Japan.

Cinderella: I’m not sure I want to meet this stranger. I doubt if he has any idea how a girl should be treated.
Christopher: Like a princess, I suppose.
Cinderella: No! Like a person with kindness and respect. My most favorite version of Cinderella. Can we talk about how BOTH main characters are people of color. Prince Charming is Asian and the most captivating person in the village is an african American woman who believes in kindness and respect? Let’s talk about it. Let’s have a full conversation about it.
No one… NO ONE will ever understand how happy this movie makes me.
